“My problem was that I would have one drink and be fine, and then I would just go too far,” Holland admitted. He shared that a turning point came when his lawyer gave him valuable advice: “You’ll never wake up the morning after a night out and wish you had a drink.”
Holland’s path to sobriety began in January 2022 when he joined the Dry January challenge. Initially intending to stop drinking for just a month, he soon realized how alcohol had become ingrained in his lifestyle.
“Every Friday after work was a write-off: Let’s get drunk and have a good time,” he said. “I didn’t have bad experiences, but I would drink enough to ruin my next day.” A pivotal moment occurred when he asked his younger brother to drive him home from a party, recognizing his growing dependence on alcohol for social enjoyment.
Filming the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room in May 2022 brought new challenges. Holland described the set as tense, with frequent conflicts among the crew. “I thought, ‘If I start drinking again now, with all this going on, it’s gonna get worse, right?’” he said.
Instead of turning to rehab, Holland leaned on his close circle of family, friends, and colleagues, as well as others who shared their own sobriety journeys. “I’m quite strong-willed,” he noted. “When I decide to do something, I’m really gonna do it.”
Holland’s commitment to sobriety has even inspired his business ventures—he recently launched a line of non-alcoholic beers called Bero. Looking back, the actor is proud of the choices that have transformed his life. “It’s really helpful when the people closest to you start going, ‘Are you sure?’”
Tom Holland’s story is a testament to the power of determination and the support of loved ones in making meaningful life changes.
