“I’m always flattered. Never say never,” Kitsch said when discussing the possibility of returning to the series. “But I would come in and maybe do something for an episode. I don’t want to go and do the whole thing. I’d go and have fun, but I don’t want to lead a ‘FNL’ or a reboot or anything.”
Kitsch further speculated about potential roles in the reboot, noting he could reprise his fan-favorite role as the Dillon Panthers’ running back, Tim Riggins. However, he admitted that a new role would be unlikely. “I think if you saw me as someone else, you’d be like, ‘That’s Riggins,’” he remarked. "Especially in that element, if you’re in Texas or doing it the way they’re gonna do it. So yeah, I would maybe play an opposing team’s coach or something, and be on screen for like eight seconds."
The Friday Night Lights reboot, first announced in November, is currently in development by NBCUniversal and will be available for streaming on Peacock. The new series will follow a high school football team and their interim coach as they strive for a state championship in the wake of a devastating hurricane, bringing hope to their struggling town.
While Kitsch is open to a return, fans should not expect him to take on a leading role in the highly anticipated project.
