Quentin Tarantino Declares the End of Hollywood and Shifts Focus to the Stage

Quentin Tarantino, known for his bold and unapologetic filmmaking, recently declared that Hollywood’s golden age is over, and theatrical releases as we know them are a thing of the past. Speaking at the Sundance Film Festival, the director of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood slammed the current state of the film industry, expressing his frustration with how movies are distributed.

Tarantino criticized the modern film cycle, where movies debut in theaters and quickly shift to streaming platforms, calling it a “show-pony exercise.” He emphasized that the film business, especially since the pandemic, has shifted drastically. “What’s a movie now? Something that plays in theaters for a token release for four weeks?” Tarantino asked. He reflected on how the industry’s approach, once challenging, has now become too routine and unsatisfying.

This dissatisfaction with Hollywood’s changes has led Tarantino to pivot toward a new venture: the stage. After announcing that he will only direct one more film to complete his 10-movie career, Tarantino revealed he is currently working on a play. Depending on its success, the play could potentially be adapted into his final film. “If it’s a smash hit, it might be my last movie,” he shared. However, he acknowledged that this is a significant challenge, one he’s excited yet uncertain about.

Tarantino’s shift is also influenced by his family life. Living in Israel with his two young children, the director is in no rush to jump back into filmmaking. “When I’m in Israel? I’m an abba, which means father,” he said, explaining that he wants to spend more time with his kids before taking on another massive project. Tarantino hopes to wait until his son is at least six before diving into another film, ensuring that his children can be a part of the experience.

With this new chapter in his career, Tarantino is taking a step away from Hollywood’s pressures, focusing on family and the artistic freedom that the stage may offer. Fans can only wait and see if his upcoming play will be the next big hit—or if it’ll remain a passion project.
