“I watched two episodes,” Richert confessed. "I watched the first one we ever did because Melissa [Joan Hart] had a party and made us all come over and watch it. And then I watched the first one she ever directed because she had a party and made us come over [to] watch it.”
Richert’s recent views of the show are partly thanks to his 14-year-old son, who enjoys watching the nostalgic series.
Reuniting with his co-stars at the 90s Con felt like a "big family reunion" for Richert, who shared the stage with Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina Spellman), Soleil Moon Frye (Roxie King), Jenna Leigh Green (Libby Chessler), and Elisa Donovan (Morgan Cavanaugh).
While many fans remember the quirky, talking cat Salem, Richert revealed an interesting fact about the feline: there were more than a dozen live stunt doubles used during filming. “I was told there were 13 of them,” he said, noting that each cat had a specific talent. "One cat was good at wearing clothes, another at climbing ladders. They all had their special thing.”
Richert also gave insight into the animatronic Salem, recalling how the crew would have a hidden woman inside the furniture to operate the cat. "So if the cat was on the back of the couch, you knew that she might be in the couch. So don't sit down too hard 'cause you'll crush her,” he laughed.
The cast also discussed Salem’s cheeky humor, with Hart noting that if the show were rebooted today, some of Salem’s lines might need a change. "Some of Salem's lines might have to change. Like he might’ve been a little racy, a little inappropriate,” Hart explained. “There were things that went over kids' heads that were for the adults. But that was mainly Salem’s lines.”
With Sabrina the Teenage Witch still loved by fans, it’s clear that the show's magic and charm continue to endure.
