Steenburgen, 71, admitted she once thought Danson, 77, was a “slick” guy due to his acting persona. However, her perspective shifted when they started dating. “How wrong I was,” she revealed. “Slick guys don’t say, ‘gosh-a-rooni,’ after making love. I’d like to apologize to my granddaughters.”
Married since 1995, Steenburgen praised Danson’s kindness and passion, both in his personal and professional life. She highlighted his dedication to environmental causes, particularly protecting the oceans, and his ability to create a positive atmosphere on set. “There is a reason Ted is treasured by everyone who works with him … Ted sets the tone,” she said.
The actress also expressed admiration for Danson’s role as a father. “I fell in love with the sort of father he is … Ted loves his daughters with all his heart and also loves my Lilly and Charlie so perfectly. It’s thrilling to go through life with him.”
The couple, who met in 1983, will celebrate 30 years of marriage in October. They attribute their bond to meaningful one-on-one time, even if it means waking up at 4:30 a.m. to enjoy coffee and play online games like Wordle and Spelling Bee. “To both of us, it’s like heaven on Earth,” Danson said.
Reflecting on their journey, Danson shared he met Steenburgen at just the right time in his life. “I decided I wanted to become a more emotionally mature, honest human being,” he said. “I worked very hard at it, or I don’t think Mary would’ve even seen me.”
Before finding each other, Steenburgen was married to Malcolm McDowell, with whom she shares children Lilly, 43, and Charlie, 41. Danson was previously married to Casey Coates, with whom he shares daughters Kate, 44, and Alexis, 39.
With nearly three decades together, Steenburgen and Danson’s love story continues to shine as a testament to growth, kindness, and enduring affection.
