Glenn Close Reveals Robin Williams’ SNL Advice That Helped Calm Her Nerves

Glenn Close, the iconic actress, credits her late friend Robin Williams for giving her valuable advice before her debut hosting Saturday Night Live. Speaking at the 12th Annual Bring Change to Mind Revels & Revelations Gala, Close, 77, shared the guidance Williams gave her ahead of her first appearance on the legendary comedy show.

“[I went to] Robin Williams, who was my friend,” Close told PEOPLE. “I said, ‘Do you have any advice about Saturday Night Live?’ And he said, ‘Just don’t do anything you don’t think is funny, because you get all these different fabulous ideas.’”

Close described his advice as incredibly helpful. Williams, known for his comedic brilliance, tragically passed away in 2014 at the age of 62.

Close first hosted SNL in February 1989, with The Gipsy Kings as the musical guest. She returned to host the show’s Christmas episode in December 1992, alongside musical guests The Black Crowes. Reflecting on her debut hosting gig, Close said, “Oh, it was great fun,” noting it happened around the release of her hit film Fatal Attraction.

One standout skit from her first episode featured her Fatal Attraction character, Alex Forrest, in a hilarious group therapy session, complete with her infamous knife and purse. “It was really fun,” Close recalled.

Other memorable sketches included Close playing a jealous sibling and a woman humorously singing about offensive remarks from her partner.

SNL, which airs weekends on NBC, is gearing up for a major milestone. The show will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a three-hour special, SNL50: The Anniversary Special, airing live from Studio 8H on Sunday, February 16, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

For Glenn Close, her time on SNL remains a cherished memory, enhanced by the wisdom of a dear friend.
