In a recent appearance on the Hollywood Gold podcast, the director explained, “I never thought it would be, you know, a movie that you watched during the holidays.... Didn’t think of it that way.” According to Meyers, the story wasn’t about creating a holiday-themed film but about telling a story centered on characters going through emotional struggles.
Meyers explained that she set the story around Christmas because, for many, the holiday season can feel isolating. “Christmas can be lonely,” she noted. “As I noted to myself last night while I was watching, they're all damaged.” The characters, portrayed by Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black, are all grappling with their own heartbreaks and personal issues, making the holiday season the perfect backdrop for their emotional journeys.
The director also shared her thoughts on the character of Miles, played by Jack Black. She described him as “the least damaged” of the group, though still dealing with his own emotional baggage. “So it was that, not, 'Hey, I think I'll make a festive holiday movie.' Not at all,” Meyers explained.
Despite the director’s original intentions, The Holiday has become a beloved film that continues to resonate with audiences, especially during the Christmas season. Since its release, the film has sparked nostalgia and comfort for viewers worldwide, many of whom still celebrate it as part of their holiday traditions.
Starring a star-studded cast that also includes Rufus Sewell, Eli Wallach, Emma Pritchard, and John Krasinski, the movie has left a lasting impact on its fans. Whether or not it was intended as a holiday movie, The Holiday has certainly become one in the hearts of many.
