Sarah Michelle Gellar Reaches Out to Julie Benz About Her Role in Dexter: Original Sin

Sarah Michelle Gellar recently shared that she reached out to her former Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star, Julie Benz, after landing a role in Dexter: Original Sin. Gellar revealed this during an interview with People magazine at the premiere of the new show’s prequel in New York City on December 11.

Benz, who played Rita, Dexter’s girlfriend and the mother of his child on the original Dexter series, starred in the show until 2010. Gellar said that she and Benz had a long conversation about the new project. Gellar also mentioned how excited Benz was about the prequel, which explores the backstory of the characters.

In addition to her role on Dexter, Benz is also known for her work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where she played Darla in the first, second, and fifth seasons. She later appeared in the Buffy spinoff Angel in 2004.

The announcement of Dexter: Original Sin has excited many fans of the original series, especially with its star-studded cast, including Gellar, Patrick Dempsey, and Patrick Gibson.

During the same interview, Gellar expressed her long-time admiration for Dexter, sharing that she had always wished to be a part of the show. She said, "I would've loved to have been a guest character on Dexter." Gellar’s co-star, Gibson, jokingly suggested that she might have “manifested” her role, and Gellar agreed, noting that she had often spoken about wanting to join the show because of its amazing character arcs. She ended by saying, “Be careful what you wish for.”
