When Faith asked about her health, Kate responded, “I didn’t know this year was going to be the year that I’ve just had,” acknowledging the unexpected challenges. Faith agreed, calling it "the unplanned," which Kate echoed, adding, "But I think lots of people this year have had such challenging times, and many who are here today."
Kate had publicly revealed her cancer diagnosis in March, after months of speculation about her absence. In September, she shared that she had completed chemotherapy but still had a long recovery ahead. Prince William, in November, called 2024 “probably the hardest year” of his life, as both Kate and King Charles battled cancer.
The carol service, which was Kate's first major public appearance since her diagnosis, was a celebration of love and empathy. This year’s event invited around 16,000 guests, including those who had made significant contributions to their communities or faced their own struggles. One of the poignant moments was when families from Southport, who had been affected by the tragic stabbing incident at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in July, were invited to the event. The attack claimed three young lives and left several others injured.
Prince William also took part, delivering a touching reading from the Bible, which spoke of light shining in the darkness. Their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, supported their mother at the event, although it does not mark her full return to royal duties.
