Isabella Rossellini Reflects on Iconic Friends Cameo and Surprising Recognition

Isabella Rossellini recently reflected on her memorable guest appearance in the iconic sitcom Friends, expressing initial surprise that the show wanted her to play herself. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about her new movie Conclave, the Italian actress shared her thoughts on the 1996 episode where she starred as a fictionalized version of herself.

“At the time, there weren’t many foreign actors recognized in America,” Rossellini said. “So I was very surprised that Friends invited me, not only as a guest but as a star. I wondered, ‘Am I really that well-known?’ It was a delight to work with them.”

Rossellini’s cameo played into a humorous storyline where Ross (David Schwimmer) listed her as one of the celebrities he’d most like to date—only to later replace her on the list because she was "often out of the country." Naturally, he ended up meeting her at Central Perk in the episode The One With Frank Jr.

When Ross awkwardly explained the concept of his list and admitted he’d swapped her out for Winona Ryder, Rossellini delivered a witty response: “I have a list of five goofy coffeehouse guys, and I just bumped you for that guy over there.”

Despite his blunder, Ross’s girlfriend Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and sister Monica (Courteney Cox) found the situation hilariously predictable. The episode ended with Ross mumbling that he and Rossellini were “just going to be friends.”

By the time of her Friends appearance, Rossellini had already built an illustrious career, starring in films like Blue Velvet and Death Becomes Her. Her latest project, Conclave, a thriller about the election of a new pope, features an impressive cast, including Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and John Lithgow. The film is now playing in theaters.
