Bill Maher Hints at Quitting Real Time if Trump Wins Second Term

Bill Maher recently hinted at the possibility of stepping away from his long-running HBO talk show, Real Time with Bill Maher. During a conversation with Jane Fonda on his Club Random podcast, recorded before the 2024 presidential election, Maher admitted he was deeply anxious about Donald Trump potentially winning a second term.

“It’s hard to believe,” Maher said, before revealing he might quit the show if Trump returns to the White House. “I don’t want to do another four years talking about the Republican president-elect. I’ve done it already.”

Maher reflected on his early criticisms of Trump, noting he called him a “con man” and “mafia boss” before most others did. “I was the one who said he wouldn’t concede the election. I’ve done it all,” he added.

When Fonda asked why Trump seems more hostile toward Jimmy Kimmel than Maher, the comedian clarified, “He’s very hostile to me. He tweets about me every week,” mimicking Trump’s voice while quoting the former president’s comments about his show’s “low ratings” and calling him a “loser.”

Maher has hosted Real Time since 2003, covering politics and current events with a mix of humor and pointed commentary. Although the 22nd season wrapped up last month, the show has already been renewed for two more seasons.

Fonda encouraged Maher to “find a new thing to do” rather than continue focusing on Trump. However, Maher pointed out that the nature of his show is inherently tied to politics. “There’s no other thing,” he said, predicting Trump will continue to dominate headlines if he regains the presidency.
