In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Sweeney opened up about the controversy, expressing disappointment in the lack of solidarity among women in Hollywood. “It’s very disheartening to see women tear other women down,” she said. “All people say is, ‘Women empowering women,’ but none of it’s happening. It’s fake.”
Sweeney went on to reflect on societal pressures that pit women against each other. “There’s this idea that only one woman can succeed, and it’s ingrained in us from a young age. Instead of lifting each other up, we end up tearing each other down,” she explained. “I’m just trying my best over here. Why am I getting attacked?”
Baum, a producer behind films like Dead Ringers and Father of the Bride, had made her remarks during a discussion in Pleasantville, New York. She questioned Sweeney’s success, asking, “She’s not pretty, she can’t act. Why is she so hot?”
The incident highlights ongoing issues of competition and criticism among women in Hollywood, a dynamic Sweeney says she hopes to change by focusing on her work and supporting others.
