Michael J. Fox Reflects on Family Support and His '80s Fame

Michael J. Fox's children are among his biggest supporters, but he admits they haven't watched all of his movies!

At a Back to the Future panel at Los Angeles Comic Con on Friday, Oct. 4, the actor discussed the various characters he played in the trilogy, including Marty McFly's daughter, Marlene, and shared his real-life daughters' opinions on his performance.

“I’m not sure if my daughters have seen it,” Fox, 63, stated.

Regarding his ability to play multiple characters, Fox said, “We had expectations and took them seriously. We aimed to be great.”

Fox added that their main goal was to make Bob Gale, the co-writer of the sci-fi films, happy.

Fox has three daughters and one son with his wife, Tracy Pollan, whom he has been married to for over 30 years. His children often appear on his social media, where he celebrates holidays with the family and gives them heartfelt birthday messages each year.

Fox attributes much of his children's growth—Sam, 35, Aquinnah, 29, Schuyler, 29, and Esmé, 22—to his longtime partner, Pollan.

In a 2022 Mother’s Day post, the actor wrote, “Our children are beautiful, sensitive, intelligent, empathetic, independent, compassionate, adventurous, and wonderful people.”

“That's your fault,” he said. “We all love you dearly. Happy Mother's Day.”

Earlier this year, the Fox family had a special reason to celebrate when Schuyler got married on Pollan’s birthday.

In June, the producer married her longtime partner in New York's Catskill Mountains, with an onlooker calling the event a “picture-perfect garden party.”

"The weather was perfect, despite the heat wave," the onlooker told PEOPLE about the couple's big day. "They dined under a tent, and it truly resembled a picture-perfect garden party."

“They appeared to be such a sweet, gentle family,” they added.

Regarding his Back to the Future legacy—which is intact regardless of whether his daughters have seen the trilogy—Fox told PEOPLE earlier this year that being “’80s famous” from his roles in the films is pretty “cool.”

He told PEOPLE in April, “When I received an honorary Academy Award, someone mentioned, ‘You’re ’80s famous.’ I thought, wow, that’s cool. ‘80s famous’—we were different.”

He added, “We were tougher. We didn’t have social media or any of that. We were simply famous and relied on our own resources. It was an incredible time.”
