In a candid interview with The Sunday Times, Turner spoke about the struggles of raising her two daughters, Willa and Delphine, post-divorce. She shared that playing the role of Joan Hannington, a jewel thief and mother, in the six-part series gave her strength during this challenging time.
“If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have brought the same energy to the role,” she said, adding that she hopes the series resonates with single mothers. Turner reflected on how difficult motherhood can be, especially with the added pressures of societal judgment. She explained that her character’s determination to fight for her daughter mirrored her own challenges.
Turner admitted that filming Joan during her divorce helped her channel strength and ambition, qualities that she needed at that time. She credited the role with giving her a renewed sense of purpose and joked that Joan even taught her how to perfect a “ring swap” in a handbag.
Joan, which is now streaming on ITV, tells the story of Joan Hannington, a young mother in her 20s who escapes a troubled relationship by turning to a life of crime. Turner's portrayal of the real-life figure highlights a mother’s resilience in the face of adversity.
