In an interview with the media, the actress stated, "For me, it had to be a musical because of the amount of work, passion, and love required. I think it could only be a musical." She also expressed her love for the genre and shared how she drew inspiration from teen productions.
The Pitch Perfect star shared, "It's kind of a long story." She then explained, "Our dogs were like the stars of our family, and one of them even auditioned for the musical 42nd Street. The dog made it to the call-backs and was supposed to run to the actress on command."
The actress also mentioned that she connected with her audience during 42nd Street Productions, which is where she first started envisioning her dream of directing a musical.
Wilson reflected, "As a 14-year-old girl going through puberty and struggling to find my place, especially with the challenges of high school, I saw this musical filled with singing, dancing, joy, and light. It was incredible, and ever since then, I've loved musicals."
She went on to explain, "I felt that if I were to step away from acting to direct, it had to be a musical. I also wanted it to be Australian, as it reflects my background and feels authentic to me. That's how The Deb came to be."
Regarding the film, the Australian actress expressed pride in how it turned out. She also praised her cast and crew, saying they did an amazing job on the project.
Reflecting on the filming process, Wilson shared, "It was a lot of fun. There was always plenty of laughter on set." She added, "We did a lot of improv, especially in scenes with me and Rebel, with lots of back-and-forth moments. It was just a great time."
