In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Furtado, now 45, discussed how photo editing affected her self-image. “I have olive skin, and they'd kind of lighten my skin a lot in photos,” she revealed. “They would always cut off my hips in editorials.” These experiences inspired her song "Powerless," from her 2003 album, Folklore, where she confronts the industry’s unrealistic beauty standards with lyrics like, “Paint my face in your magazines / Make it look whiter than it seems.”
Despite these challenges, Furtado feels grateful for her supportive team and her upbringing. Raised in British Columbia by Portuguese immigrant parents, she credits her strong family values for helping her navigate the music industry. "I was given a really solid sense of assertiveness,” she said. “I always had such a good team around me, that was family.”
Furtado also emphasized the importance of trusting one's instincts, particularly in creative endeavors. She often brought her own clothes to photo shoots to ensure she felt comfortable and true to herself. “You have to listen to the tiny voice inside,” she advised.
After taking a break from the spotlight to focus on raising her children—Nevis Gahunia, 21, and her two younger children—Furtado has returned with her seventh album, 7, released on September 20. This new record marks her first in seven years, and she describes the process as a rejuvenation of her craft. “It's like a whole new me, who's stronger, braver, more confident,” she stated, highlighting her collaboration with her daughter, Nevis, on the project.
