Although Erik and Lyle Menendez have criticized the series for its portrayal, Lane suggested that it "may actually help" their case. He pointed out that today’s jury, more aware of emotional and physical abuse, could reach a different conclusion.
Reflecting on the 1990s trial, Lane recalled how the public viewed the brothers as murderers due to their lies and subsequent spending spree. The Menendez brothers’ first trial in 1993 ended in a mistrial, but in 1995, they were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole.
Recently, Erik Menendez criticized the Netflix series, calling it a source of "misinformation" and expressing disappointment over the portrayal of his brother, Lyle. Lane responded by emphasizing that the series is a dramatization, not a documentary.
In Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story, Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez star as Erik and Lyle Menendez, while Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny portray their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez.
